Meaning of this name is unknown.
Faith L Smith says: Descendants of Yorkshire VAUTREYs live in the US with the name being carried as a middle name. Four generations of Firth Garside Vautrey BOWDENs have lived in New Jersey; Roy Vautrey LINDLEY [dec'd] carried his mother's maiden name, as do his son and grandson. The original VAUTREY immigrants either only had female children, or the sons died without issue. There have been VAUTREYs in Louisiana, probable descendants of French families, and at least one recent instance of a given name, the late Vautrey Tubbs, in Texas. Adrian Woll, a military adventurer under Napoleon and later aligned with Santa Anna in the Texas/Mexican war married a Mexican national named Lucinda Vautrey Griggi, of whom nothing else is yet known. Although I've found VAUTREYs in the 1700's, BAWTRY variants were the most common usage until the turn of the 18th-19th centuries when some of the children of John Bawtry [1775-1836] began to take the spellings of Votry, Votrie, Vawtrey, etc, finally settling on Vautrey or Vautry by the early 1800's. John Bawtrey himself died and was buried as John Vautry in 1835. Both variants are used today, sometimes one individual being known by both variants [i.e., Dr. Richard Vautrey/Vautry, prominent Leeds physician]. I've been researching the name for almost 30 years, and have become convinced that the patronym originated in the Jura region of France and Switzerland, but have not been able to make a definitive connection as to when it crossed the channel. My family oral history attests to a French origin, as does occasional spellings as "Vautray" hinting at a French pronunciation. I'm not convinced that they are related to the London BAWTREEs, who immigrated due to French religious prosecution. I also see no connection to VAUDR[e]Y, although there are occasional errors in records, and VAUDRY's are common in Cheshire bordering West Yorkshire. Regarding the surname in India, I've had no luck in finding the French or English "patriarch" of that lineage, but remain hopeful. My research has further convinced me that all the Vautrey's of English heritage are related, and there's a good chance that the French are as well.
