Meaning of this name is unknown.
James Kinniburgh says: My father always told me the name meant "the principle city'" and our family coat of arms, I am told, is that of then city of Glasgow. Given its similarity to other names of similar construction, it likely means "the king's city," and refers to Glasgow. Glasgow was founded by Saint Mungo (a.k.a. St. Kentigern)' the grandson of King Leudonus. St. Mungo and his miracles appear in Glasgow's crest.

Alistair Kinniburgh says: To Keith Kinniburgh, S. Godstone, Surrey Copy of my Address : On-the Kinniburgh Family to the Scottish Genealogy Society at Edinburgh in September, 1962 and printed in their Quarterly Journal of December, 1962 (Vol IX, no. 4) T.C. Kinniburgh T H E K I N N I B U R G H S - BROUGHT FROM THEIR OBSCURITY The Spelling of the Name As you know, the derivation of a surname can very often be found by Searching for the early spellings, ane with the name Kinniburgh I was fortunate in this. Wishing to look up the birth of my great, great, great grandfather (which from a family document I had leamed-was at Kirkintilloch on 6th-July 1729) I was astonished to find that, in the Parish Register, it was spelt C-U-N-N-I-B-U-R-G-H. So, from the indites G Deny publications on Scottish Family Histories, State Papers (EngUsh and Scottish), Parish Registers and other official sources, I was able to look under the initial C" as well as "K". I then found traces of many Kinniburghs (which, up till then had thought a very uncommon T surname) with the name variously spelt, taking the family name back to the middle of the Xllth Century, So far, I have unearthed 343 different spellings beginning with C" two with "G" and 216 with K", a total of 561 (all with their appropriate references), which may well be a record for any surname. The faltering but logical passage of the name down through the ages appears to be roughly as foUows:- Commencing with the primary syllables "CONIG" and "BOROUGFT' a possessive "S." was added making it CONTGS-BURGH'; then an "N." was inserted before the G" - CONINGS". Later the "S." and then the "G." were dropped making it "CONNIN'. It was not until the XVIIth Century that the form CONTNTNG gave way to CONNI" which paved the way to the present (almost universal) spelling K-I-N-N-I-B-U-R-G-H, because, as the number of consonants decreased so the vowels got shorter - the "O" to "U", and the U" to "N and "I". A homely Scottish illustration of this is "Fitba Bits" for Football Boots. In the total of 561, the second part of the name - "BURGH", as you can imagine, also varied considerably and, among the official records I have noted 159 different renderings compared with 226 for the first part of the name. The earliest instance noted so far of the surname as it is generally spelt today was in the year 1706 (1) but it was not until about 1750 that it was more or less stabiUsed in this form. Even as late as 18311 have seen it conmienced with "CUNNING", (2), and a "CANIBROUGH" occurs in the Census of Liverpool in 1851. A large branch of the family in London and Cheshire, whose ancestor left Edinburgh for London about 1820, finish their name B-R-U-G-H (pronounced Brew) and a Melbourne family whose forefather emigrated from Edinburgh before 1860, spell their name with only one "N.". I will finish this part of my reading with a reference to the very large number in USA spellmg their name K-I-N-E-B-R-E-W, X-E-N-N-E-B-R-E-W, etc., who seemed to be descended from a Kinniburgh, traditionally supposed to have come from Scotland, who held lands in Virginia nearly three hundred years ago. An interesting fact is that there are many Negroes now in USA with the name K-I-N-N-E-B- R-E-W (variously spelt) who are descended from slaves owned by numerous members of the family. When the slaves there were freed in 1865, many took the surnames of their former masters; as previously they had baptismal names only. The Derivation of the Name During the last 40 years I have heard, and read of, many derivations for the name Kimiiburgh. It was a common Christian name for women in England in Saxon times: there was even a Saint Kineburga (3)
