Meaning of this name is unknown.
Berthold Alkofer London UK says: The name Alkofer has it's (traceable) roots in Catalonia. It's derived from the Arabic word القبة‎, al-qubbah, meaning dome/vault ( derived in Spanish alcoba, German Alkoven, English alcove). The Moorish Muslims brought the word (with their language) to Spain. In 778 CE Charlemagne (Karl der Große) conquered lands in today's Catalonia (today an autonomous community in Spain). This included the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona. Charlesmagne disposed of the ruling Merovingian family of Bavaria in 788, when duke Tasillo III was disposed that year (after a failed alliance with the Lombard Kingdom). The duchy of Bavaria was then controlled by Frankish prefects. To fill the void in Bavaria, prefects have been withdrawn from Barcelona and the "Spanish March" (more correct the Gothic March / Marca Ghotica) to rule/govern in Bavaria. It was in or after 788 CE, when the "court" / administration moved from the Spanish March (today's Spain) to Bavaria that the name moved to today's Bavaria in Germany. In Germany, the name changed to Alkofer, better fitting with the Bavarian/German language. It was from Bavaria/Germany that the name finally spread further, mainly into the "New World", the USofA. Only a relative minority moved to neighbouring German areas, like Austria, which is today a separate, independent country or further away to Alsace, which is in France today. BTW at the time of the Frankish Empire, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy did not exist, they were just lands or regions within the Frankish Empire. The name "Alkofer" was not only given to people, but to places, too. It is even more likely that people were named after the place they came from. The closest link to the name we have today is the municipality Alcover in the comarca of Alt Camp, Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain), which is about 85 km (direct line) away from Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, under Frankish control in 778 (and 788) until the 10th century, when Barcelona became independent from the Frankish Empire (together with the March of Spain or Gothia [in Latin Marca Ghotica]). So, Alcover in Catalonia/Spain is most likely the closest link today to the name Alkofer, most likely meaning a person from Alcover, which might have been named after alcobar/alcove/Alkoven, possibly either because of the building style of that town or perhaps the trade dominant people were in (so builders, who were good in building alcoves, the alcovers simply). Ultimately, the word comes from Arabia القبة‎, al-qubbah, meaning dome or vault. So, it's highly likely that the first Alkofers were Moorish Arabs, either settlers in Alcover or tradesmen (alcovers), who might have simply moved to the area or possibly even built the municipality. With this link, it's quite likely that every Alkofer is about 1/70 an Arab (having Arab ancestors about 35 generations ago, from the family name givers side, which was in medieval France and Germany the male founder of the next generation family). The Bavarian/German Alkofers made their mark on the new, adopted lands, too. There are two Alkofen in Lower Bavaria/Germany and an Alkoven in Upper Austria. Berthold Alkofer, London, UK postscript: I have done fairly extensive research to get all the facts together as they are. So, I regard this research as my intelectual property. You may use my research results free of charge for your purposes, but only when credit/reference is given to my research work each and every time.

Daniel Alkofer says: I have a history of the Alkofers in Bavaria that included my father's family in northern Illinois, USA.
